How long have you been doing triathlons?

My first triathlon was in June of 2019, but I started training in Sept of 2018. I went from zero to Ironman AZ in 14 months

    What is your favorite distance?

For fun, I would say 70.3, but for feeling of accomplishment I would say 140.6

What is your favorite race to date?

Ironman 70.3 Traverse City. I started biking when I lived there in 2012. It was great to go back and see so many friends during the race. The water was crystal clear and it was my first real feeling of "I can do this"

    Why do you tri?

I started by wanting to eat better and exercise more when I turned 50 this past December. Then I had this wild idea to do an Ironman to force me to create good habits.

What's your favorite - swim bike or run?

I'd have to say the bike since I have been cycling the longest. Its definitely not the run and I couldn't swim 2 years ago.

What's your A race this year?

Ironman Mont Tremblant 140.6 on August 23rd

What do you do when you're not training?

Does that really exist?  I usually travel to see my grandkids and other countries when I can.

How do you balance triathlon and family?

My son is grown, lives out of state and I work from home. My schedule is very flexible.

What advice would you give to someone just starting the sport?

Don't swing for the fences right away. Trust the process of building slowly, It's very possible to achieve great things no matter your situation. Set a lofty goal and the AMC support will keep you going.

What skill or experience would no one guess you have?

I have a Hotel and Restaurant degree and was a teaching assistant for a cooking class back in the day.

Race Preference:  Small and Local or Big and National?

Big and National for the pure energy that sweeps you up whether you are racing or not.

Gu's, drink mix, or real food?

Since I don't do caffeine and very little sugar, I had to really work on this one. I do a mix of custom Infinit in my bottles, Hammer Gel for the run and Skratch bars on the bike. I also throw in a Peanut butter and Jelly sandwich at each transition.

    Coffee, beer, or wine?

I dont drink caffeine, so its Decaf coffee for sure. And since I started training, my alcohol consumption has gone way down. But I would say beer over wine.

Brent, we know you have a unique story both with your weight loss and your height.  Would you mind sharing a little of it?

I've been a computer programmer, inventor, business owner and sat behind my desk for my whole working life for 8 to 10 hours a day.  At 7' the most common phrase I get is "Do you play Basketball".  But I'm terrible at it and all other group sports!  I rarely exercised beyond home projects.  I've struggled with weight gain all my life and peaked at 320lbs around 10 years ago.  My knees hurt, I was tired and a big sweat machine all the time, very unhealthy.

After much discouragement, end of 2015 I downloaded couch to 5k app and started running, as the fastest way to burn calories and get the yucky exercise done quickly.

One goal led to another, in 2016 Bolder Boulder 10k, October Rock n Roll Half Marathon, and in January 2017 did my first Marathon in Arizona.  Never had marathon as a goal and mostly hated running, but just kept doing it and setting targets as I went.  I'm goal driven, and I knew if I didn't set another bigger target after each one then I'd be in trouble and fall back into bad habits.  Read an article about Ironman which said if you could do a marathon, that was the hardest part of an Ironman, and you could probably do one.

Downloaded the free 12-week program.  Joined Altitude, hoping the social aspects of it would make the exercise more enjoyable, and it has when I take advantage of group activities.

Bought a custom sized bike for 7' person and started swimming for the first time in my life last February.  So, started the 5-month Marathon to Ironman program.  I was so afraid of the swim, or it would have been shorter.

Amazing how weight control became easier when exercising 10-15 hours a week.  I lost the final 50 lbs. since starting the running and now sit around 190lbs compared to 320lbs.

How long have you been doing triathlons?

7 Months.  Boulder Sunrise June 2017, Ironman Santa Rosa July, Ironman Coeur d' Alene in August.   I was told by multiple people in the club, take it slow and work up to it over a couple years, and that only made me want it more.  In my mind it was a formula.  Do the workouts, you can do the race.

What made you decide to jump right into an Ironman?

I wanted to hear those words "Brent Safer, You Are an Ironman!".  Something no one in my family history has ever done.  It sounds horribly shallow but it's what I wanted.  My motto for life has been I can do anything by reading, with enough self-push, and a "Don't quit" attitude.  Throughout the training, I kept thinking I want to show my kids this "Don't ever give up and you can do anything".  You can even be an Ironman if you want it bad enough.

    What is your favorite distance?

Can't answer.  I seem to like racing, surprise!  Even shorter races, tons of fun, and neat people.

What is your favorite race so far?

IM Santa Rosa was beautiful Course.

    Why do you tri?

Keep the weight off and be happy with myself.

Which is your favorite?  Swim, bike or run?

    Cycling.

What is your A race this year?

You can only accomplish what your body God gave you will allow depending on how you treat it.  I was fortunate last year, but this year am being hampered towards my next goal of increasing speed due to injury.   Only thing I've signed up for is Evergreen Sprint.

What do you do when you are not training?

Working (App development), family, and vacation travel.

How do you balance triathlon and family?

My kids are all grown, and my job is super flexible.  I think anyone that can accomplish all this with full time job, kids at home and is able to balance it, is truly an amazing person!

What advice would you give to someone just starting this sport?

Don't let people tell you what you can or can't do.  Know yourself, go do it, and have fun!

What skill or experience would no one guess you have?

I play classical piano and keyboards/guitar and have played in bars, weddings, you name it over the years, but mostly play in church now.

    Speed round:

Race preference: Small and Local or Big and National

    Big and National

Gus, drink mix or real food?

    Gu's.

    Coffee, beer or wine?

    Coffee!!!!

How long have you been doing triathlons?

This is my second season doing triathlons.  I started in 2016 with the first timer's program that Justin Chester runs through Parker Rec.

    What is your favorite distance?

I think that's evolving as I get more races under my belt, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved racing the olympic distance at Boulder Peak.  If the one next month goes that well, olympic will for sure be my favorite distance.... until I do the next distance...

What is your favorite race to date?

Without question Evergreen Triathlon.  It was my second race, and the one where I really caught the tri bug.  It was hard - the swim was cold, the bike is a legit climb, and I was gassed for the run.  But it's absolutely gorgeous, and I loved every minute of it.

    Why do you tri?

For my kids.  I want them to see their mom take on impossible goals and work hard to achieve them, and I want them to learn that the journey and effort is more important than winning or being the absolute best.  When I was a kid, I didn't try a lot of things because I thought I wouldn't be good at them.

What's your favorite - swim bike or run?

Swim - and it's shocking to say that because at the beginning of 2016, I didn't know how to swim freestyle.

What's your A race this year?

Chicago Triathlon (Olympic distance) - it's my first travel race, and I'm doing it with my training buddy Joyce St. Amand.

What do you do when you're not training?

I work full time as an administrative judge, and I spend a lot of time with my kids.  I also love to ski and do crossfit (but I guess those are also training...).

How do you balance triathlon and family?

I'm very lucky that right now I work primarily from home on a flexible schedule, so I do a lot of my training during the day when my kids are in school.  I'm also fortunate to be an ambassador for BringtheKidz which does day camps at a lot of local races.  It's always a juggling act for sure.

What advice would you give to someone just starting the sport?

It's the same advice I still have to give myself - be patient with yourself.  Sometimes gains in this sport come excruciatingly slowly, and it's easy to compare yourself to others and feel like you aren't getting anywhere.  I've had to calm myself down many times, and just remember that the training itself is the success and speed is kind of immaterial (and will probably catch up eventually... I hope...).

What skill or experience would no one guess you have?

I had a black belt in TaeKwonDo when I was in my 20s (don't mess with Jess).

    Speed Round:

Race Preference:  Small and Local or Big and National?

Small and local (because that's all I've done).

Gu's, drink mix, or real food?

    Shot blocks

    Coffee, beer, or wine?

All of the above (separately, not mixed together)

How long have you been doing triathlons?

I've been doing tris since 2008. However, I did take a hiatus from 2013-2015 and got back into it in 2016.

    What is your favorite distance?

I think I enjoy sprints and olympics the most. You're done within a couple/few hours and can have the rest of your day.

What is your favorite race to date?

I think my favorite race to date is the Loveland Lake to Lake race. It's well organized and a beautiful challenge. I first races it when I was living in Iowa and it helped draw me to Colorado.

    Why do you tri?

I first started tris because an old buddy of mine was in the tri club at Iowa State. I figured if he could do it, so can I.

What's your favorite - swim bike or run?

I think my answer used to be the bike. However, now that I've become a somewhat proficient swimmer I'm leaning towards the swim.

What's your A race this year?

I suppose steamboat oly is my A, but I'm just getting myself back into the sport, so not really putting too much pressure on myself.

What do you do when you're not training?

When I'm not training I'm teaching  (middle school science), coaching (HS cross country and track, and ms basketball) or playing cello in a couple of different groups.

What skill or experience would no one guess you have?

I guess the cello playing I previously discussed would be a skill no one would have guessed I possessed.

    Speed Round:

Race Preference:  Small and Local or Big and National?

    I prefer small, local races.

Gu's, drink mix, or real food?

I use whatever nutrition a race provides, for longer races , but like to stick to "real" food for training.

    Coffee, beer, or wine?

I drink at least a half a pot worth of coffee a day. Will have the occasional beer after a long day or to refresh after a good workout.  And will often accept a wine offering when the time suits it.

How long have you been doing triathlon? I did my first triathlon in 2009 at the age of 60. It was Tri for the Cure, a Sprint. I had to learn to swim in order to do it. I did know how to keep from drowning, but not actually to swim, as it was I doggie paddled a lot of the race with my head above water. Flat pedals on my bike. It was a fun introduction. I waited a year and did the same race the following year.

What is your favorite distance? I think my favorite distance is the Olympic, but the 70.3 is a close contender.

What is your favorite race to date? My favorite race so far, is the Honu 70.3 in Kona, Hawaii, 2016. I did this race for the first time in 2013 and missed the cutoff by 3 minutes. My first DNF. I was devastated. I signed up again in 2014 but could not compete due to a stress fracture in my heel. 2015 saw a bike accident when I hit a pothole and flew off the bike breaking and fracturing 7 ribs. That brought me to 2016. I wanted my 3 minutes back. I think I got about 40 minutes back and finished in 2nd place. The award was the same bowl given at the Ironman World Championships. I had a hard time trying to keep from crying at the awards ceremony.

Why do you tri? I think I tri because it is an addiction. One race leads to another. I finish a race and decide I am not going to do that distance again and before I know it I have signed up for another race. Racing has become part of my life. I love it.

What's your favorite - swim bike or run? I have to say the bike is my favorite discipline.

What's your A race this year? My A race next year is not my longest. I will be doing Buffalo Springs 70.3, but I feel my A race is the USAT National Championships in August. Last year I finished 13th in the Olympic Distance and qualified for the USAT World Championships, but did not podium, top 10 podium. I would like to podium this year. It's a long shot, but we all have to have dream.

What do you do when you're not training? Off season, I take off. I usually set up my races so my season runs almost all year. I am pretty burned out by the time I do my last race. Last year my first race was in June and my last race was IMAZ. I trained almost all year.

What skill or experience would no one guess you have? I was a medical lab technician in the Air Force, chemistry was my specialty. I also have a degree in tailoring

    Speed Round!

Race Preference: Small and Local or Big and National? Big races. I love the buzz.

Gels, blocks, or real food? I prefer liquid race nutrition with a little real food thrown in to keep from getting bored.

Coffee, beer, or wine? That's easy, ALL OF THE ABOVE, just no soda.
